Books for 2019-20:

  • The author's first novel, a New York Times bestseller, is both a murder mystery and a coming-of-age story. Set in the 1950s in North Carolina, the story revolves around an abandoned child known as the Marsh Girl, who lives in relative isolation along the desolate coast.

  • "Lab Girl ...a beautifully written memoir about the life of a woman in science, a brilliant friendship, and the profundity of trees. Terrific." - Barack Obama
"Engrossing. . . . Thrilling. . . . Does for botany what Oliver Sacks's essays did for neurology, what Stephen Jay Gould's writings did for paleontology." - The New York Times

  • This fiction about an eccentric and regimented loner speaks to the importance of friendship and human connection as the plot follows how her life unfolds beautifully after a chance encounter with a complete stranger.

  • "A gripping examination of the dark side of an iconic American product and a moving portrait of the women who lived in the shadow of its fractured fortune, Jell-O Girls is a family history, a feminist history, and a story of motherhood, love and loss and the Jell-O curse." -- Goodreads
