Middle School Computer Expectations

The Middle School computer curriculum helps students build on skills that were introduced at the elementary level. The goal of the program is to make sure that students are completely fluent in and at ease with using the tools of technology, so that students can concentrate on expanding their knowledge through curriculum projects rather than learning specific steps in computer operations.

The computer curriculum enables students to use software applications that support the school's interdisciplinary curriculum, such as desktop publishing tools, databases, spreadsheets, graphing programs, multimedia authoring and video editing tools. A centerpiece of the program is the use of multimedia and digital video to enhance curriculum projects.

Ethical use of technology is emphasized during computer classes.Two computer teachers coordinate and support the Middle School program. Computer aides also provide support in the computer labs.
The technology curriculum is embedded within the context of departmental educational goals. The following are examples of how technology is used to enhance instruction in the various departments: 

    • Examine the ways in which word processing can support the writing process
    • Use presentation software, like Microsoft PowerPoint, to enhance public speaking presentations
    • Use technology for research.
    • Create multimedia projects, including iPhoto book, poetry Web pages, and presentations
    • Analyze data through computer graphing programs
    • Continue development of spreadsheet-based problem-solving unit (seventh grade)
    • Complete a computer graphing and spreadsheet unit involving the Stock Market (eighth grade)
    • Use Excel spreadsheets, charting software and financial investment simulations

  • Art

    • Use Internet art sites, virtual museums and podcasts for research
    • Use presentation software such as Keynote and PowerPoint to create an art history project (sixth and eighth grades)
    • Use digital image editing software such as Adobe Photoshop to design and transform images (seventh grade) culminating with a final project (eighth grade)
    • Use word processing for research and for writing a reflection paper

    Family and Consumer Science 

    • Use the Career Cruising online program to complete a personal inventory
    • Use a word processing program to write business letters and resumes.

    Industrial Technology  

    •  Use CAD software to design speaker circuits (sixth grade)
    •  Use design software to create images for stationery (sixth grade)
    •  Complete a unit of study on basic computer operations and terminology, including digital media (sixth grade)
    •  Use CAD software to design objects which are constructed in Technology classes (seventh grade)
    • Use Adobe Illustrator to control an engraving machine (eighth grade)
    • Use Adobe Photoshop, scanning utilities, and iMovie video editing software to create the Middle School Video Yearbook (eighth grade)
    • Use digital camcorders and iMovie video editing software to create short news programs (eighth grade)
    • Use Adobe Illustrator in conjunction with CAD software to design a keychain (seventh grade)
    • Use Excel spreadsheets for the bridge modeling project in eighth grade, and to caclulate timelines and distances

    • Use probes to measure and graph data (seventh and eighth grades)
    • Use technology to create presentations, complete with data charts, for units of study.
    • Create presentations using Keynote and PowerPoint
    • Access science information through a variety of Web technologies and search engines, videoconferencing, podcasting, and simulations
    • Use Internet resources to support the curriculum
    • Create and use a database to organize research, support collaboration, publish information, as well as to analyze data
    • Use presentation software such as Keynote or PowerPoint to accompany an oral report
    • Access information through a variety of Web technologies and search engines, videoconferencing, podcasting, iMovies,and software such as ComicLife
    • Engage in guided Internet research of French and Spanish-speaking cities and countries
    • Create presentations using a variety of software programs
    • Use word processing for reports, including foreign language symbols
    • Connect to peers in other countries using the Internet.
    • Use podcasts to support vocabulary development and other language skills
    • Use appropriate software for uploading and downloading photos, text, audio and video
    • Use digital resources to create projects and to design study materials
    • Use video iPods for listening to podcasts and audio books and for viewing videos

    • Create enhanced podcasts for units of study

    • Utilize Web 2.0 technologies such as blogs and Wikis
    • Create a digital portfolio highlighting accomplishments during the term 
    • Review iPod student concert recordings and compositions from Exploring Music classes
    • Use auditorium lighting board to control cues for musical productions, the Talent Show, and evening concerts 
    • Use music software programs Music Ace (sixth grade/Exploring Music) and Essentials of Music Theory (sixth and seventh grade/Chorus) to enable students to learn music theory at their own pace
    • Use Sibelius notation software to transfer compositions from a rough draft to a professional-looking music score (Exploring Music)
    • Create music arrangements and compositions using GarageBand (Exploring Music)
    • Use audio editing in GarageBand such as ducking, transposition, and cutting and pasting features
    • Create podcasts of student research projects about orchestral instruments, folk instruments and world instruments,using GarageBand (sixth grade/Exploring Music) 
    • Use the Web for interactive experiences such as Webquests, Blues Road Trip, and to research a famous music institution in preparation for a field trip (eighth grade/Exploring Music)
    • Use iPods as an instructional tool in learning guitar (eighth grade/Exploring Music), and to reinforce learning a melody (Chorus)
    • Use M-Audio keyboards as a controller to learn basic piano keyboard skills, and to compose blues arrangements (Exploring Music)
    • Use PowerPoint /Keynote presentation software for a research project
    • Use electric guitars as well as acoustic guitars for advanced guitar skills in eighth grade, for students who can work independently at their own proficiency levels

    • Use BLUE Snowball microphones and advanced GarageBand editing techniques for an acoustic guitar composing and arranging recording  project

    • Use the Internet for music research projects, guided by the librarians
    • Use digital heart rate monitors while working out on the exercise equipment.
    • Use a Microsoft Excel template to chart heart rate and print a graph.
    • Use pre-selected Web sites to research information on bullying, to be used in writing and publishing a bullying awareness flyer
    • Use an online database to input information into a food diary, and analyze the results
    • Learn how to evaluate Web sites for reliability and pertinence of information
    • Create a public service advertisement using podcasting, digital movies and desktop publishing programs
    • Participate in videoconferences
    • Conduct research using subscription health and wellness online databases, enter information in their own databases using Filemaker Pro, and apply their research to create a health brochure, using word processing
